This workshop is designed to help you practice cognitive behavior therapy in culturally responsive ways. Using the ADDRESSING framework, we’ll consider influences related to Age and generational roles, Disability, Religion and spirituality, Ethnic and racial identity, Socioeconomic status, Sexual orientation, Indigenous heritage, National origin, and Gender. Learn how to inspire clients with a Personal Strengths Inventory that incorporates culturally based strengths; avoid the biggest CBT mistake of premature cognitive restructuring; and develop culturally congruent homework. Specific cultural adaptations will include Compassion Voice, Attitude of Gratitude, Wise Elder, Most Generous Interpretation Technique, and the use of metaphors.

Presenter

Pamela Hays, PhD

Dr. Hays holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hawaii and served as NIMH postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester School of Medicine followed by 11 years teaching at Antioch University Seattle. Her research has included work with Muslim women in North Africa, and Southeast Asian people in the U.S.  In 2000, she returned to her hometown in Alaska where she has worked with the local community health center, the Dena’ina Wellness Center, and in private practice. She is the author of several books on multicultural practice and her therapeutic work is featured in APA-produced videos.
