Yes, We Do That Too: The Many Roles for Pain Psychologists

Knowledge regarding pain psychology concepts, diagnostics, and treatment is lacking across professional disciplines- including our own. Learners will leave equipped with understanding of the biospychosocial treatment model of pain, as well as tools, skills, enduring resources to engage patients in psychosocial pain treatment. Targeted outcomes are increased confidence and ability to facilitate patient engagement in self-management of pain. Using a Public Heath model of care, and integrating the recommendations from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2019, May) Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force Report: Updates, Gaps, Inconsistencies, and Recommendations, this talk will explore the plethora of areas in which a psychologist can make a significant impact on the treatment of pain.

Presenter

Judith Scheman, PhD

Dr. Scheman has been the director of behavioral medicine for the Cleveland Clinic Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute since July 2016. She has been a member of the Cleveland Clinic staff since July, 1995. Prior to her present position she served as the director of psychology, research, and education; director of the Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program in the Center for Neurological Restoration; and held a joint appointment in the Center for Spine Health. In addition, she is a clinical professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Learner College of Medicine of the Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Scheman is an AAPM member and the first non-MD to hold a position on the board. She is co-chair of the Pain Psychology Task Force and co-founder and co-chair of the Pain Psychology Shared Interest Group and serves on the Membership Committee. She received her BS in psychology from the University of Washington and her MA and PhD from Kent State University in clinical psychology and behavioral medicine.
