This intermediate workshop focuses on current research, policy, and best practices for the clinical care of LGBT adults. The presenters emphasize health care disparities, suicide prevention, and unique care considerations amidst a global pandemic. Participants learn techniques to integrate affirmative care principles into practice (in person and virtual), documentation and privacy considerations, multiple relationships and ethical considerations, and skill development for delivering transgender specialty care services (e.g., readiness evaluations).  Original webcast date: August 4, 2020.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the role of minority stress theory on LGBT-related health care disparities.
  2. Provide examples of affirmative, evidence-based best practices to delivery of care (in person and virtual) for LGBT adults.
  3. Discuss ethical considerations in working with LGBT adults.

Presenters

Tiffany M. Lange, PsyD

Dr. Lange is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at the Hampton VA Medical Center (Hampton, Virginia). She specializes in services related to trauma reactions, substance use disorders, and reducing healthcare disparities. Dr. Lange has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, provides affirmative care trainings across the country, assisted her facility in earning and maintaining the coveted status of “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign, and has been awarded three national I-CARE Awards for her efforts.

Shelby Robinson, MEd, MA

Ms. Robinson recently completed her predoctoral internship at the Hampton VA Medical Center (Hampton, Virginia) with an anticipated Doctorate of Psychology from Adler University Chicago in August 2020. She will be completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the San Diego VA Medical Center, developing expertise in Lesbian Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Veterans. Her academic and clinical work has specialized in treatment for traumatic stress and substance abuse. She is an advocate for increasing health equity for marginalized populations.
