In this intermediate workshop, participants learn the many uses of virtual reality (VR) in treating anxiety disorders. VR is a technological breakthrough in the treatment of anxiety, including multiple specific phobias, panic disorder and agoraphobia, posttraumatic stress disorder, public speaking fear, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. VR helps teach relaxation and mindfulness. Research findings and clinical experience support VR’s effectiveness. Case examples illustrate VR therapy. Participants learn how to use VR in their clinical work, including how and when to do VR exposure therapy (VRET) and how to use VR remotely with telepsychology clients.  Original webcast date: August 4, 2020.

Learning Objectives

  1. List three advantages of VR exposure over imaginal exposure or in vivo exposure.
  2. Name two anxiety disorders for which VR exposure is appropriate and effective.
  3. Describe two research findings that support clinical uses of VR, especially VRE for fears, phobias, and anxiety.
