Suicide risk screening and assessment is limited by the low base rate of suicidal behavior, the inherently dynamic nature of suicide risk, and reliance on self-disclosure. This presentation will introduce the concept of emergence, discuss its applicability to suicide, and consider how this framework could advance suicide risk assessment and intervention. Several promising new methods for suicide risk screening and assessment based on the concept of emergence will be introduced and discussed, along with implications for clinical practice.
