Toward Gender-Affirming Parenting: Building Capacity for Caregivers of Gender-Diverse Children, Teens, and Young Adults

Venue

This is a virtual event, accessible online and over the phone. Access instructions will be provided after registration.

Description

This workshop is designed for clinicians who wish to develop their skills in supporting caregivers of gender-diverse youth and young adults in affirming their loved ones’ gender identities. Research widely underscores the importance of supportive family members in long-term health outcomes for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people. But what does the therapist do when a young patient’s parents express reluctance, confusion, or discomfort with their child’s gender journey? This workshop will provide concrete, actionable approaches for clinicians to: safely make space for parents’ feelings; challenge parents while preserving the therapeutic relationship; and deepen parents’ connection with their gender-diverse children of all ages. Original webinar date: May 14, 2021. CC

Learning Objectives

· Identify strategies for increasing parents’ capacity to understand, affirm, and celebrate their loved ones’ emergent gender identities.
