Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people experience chronic invalidation, which contributes to emotional disorders. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a treatment for emotion dysregulation rooted in the impact of an invalidating environment. This intermediate workshop focuses on how to adapt and apply DBT to clinical work with SGM people. The session includes live therapy demonstrations of the individual psychotherapy and the skills-training group modes of DBT. The presenters demonstrate how to teach DBT skills with adapted teaching points relating to minority stress, and they conduct a behavior chain analysis relevant to SGM health disparities. Original webcast date: August 10, 2021

Learning Objectives:

  • Articulate how to integrate minority stress theories with the biosocial model of emotion dysregulation for clinical work with SGM people.
  • Identify ways to adapt DBT skills training when working with SGM people.
  • Conduct a behavior chain analysis that is affirming and relevant to the identities and health of SGM people.
