Description

Closed captioning is provided with this program

This intermediate workshop provides an overview of integrative behavioral couple therapy (IBCT), an evidence-based treatment for couples developed and tested with federal grant support. The presenter, the co-developer of IBCT, describes IBCT, shows video clips of couples during IBCT to illustrate treatment strategies, and answers participants’ questions. Because of its empirical base, IBCT has been adopted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as one of its evidence-based treatments, and the Administration for Children & Families is currently funding a research program examining the efficacy of an IBCT-based online program for low-income and military couples. Original webcast date: August 13, 2021

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the DEEP conceptualization of couple problems in IBCT.
  • Discuss the evaluation and feedback procedures in IBCT.
  • Compare the core treatment strategies of “empathic joining” and “unified detachment” in IBCT.

Presenter

Andrew Christensen, PhD

Dr. Christensen, Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at UCLA, developed Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) along with the late Neil Jacobson. IBCT has been adopted throughout the U.S. Veteran’s Administration and been adapted into an online program www.OurRelationship.com with both in-person and online versions demonstrating efficacy for couples. Christensen has given workshops on IBCT throughout the world. His work has been cited in the Washington Post New York Times Time Magazine USA Today and other news outlets.
