Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Common Clinical Concerns

This live one-day Institute will focus on cognitive behavioral therapy for common clinical concerns, specifically in the domains of anxiety, depression, body dysmorphic disorder, and ethics. The Institute will consist of four 120-minute live webinars, presented sequentially, September 30, 2022. Continuing Education (CE) credit is included in the registration fee. Each session offers 2 CE Credits. All participants will receive archived versions of all sessions within 5 days of the live broadcast and will still have the opportunity to earn CE credits.

All programs include a Live presentation, PowerPoint slides, Q&A with the presenter, and may include interactive polling and other resources, with an emphasis on active learning strategies and the translation of new knowledge into clinical practice.

All webinars are converted to video on-demand programs with closed captioning after the live air date.

American Psychological Association is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) State Board for Psychology as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed psychologists #PSY-0100. Programs in this category meet NYSED requirements unless otherwise specified.

Overview of Cognitive Behavior Therapy in 2022

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

While many clinicians, researchers, and educators are familiar with CBT theory, conceptualization, and treatment, they may be unaware of the refinements made over the previous decade. This presentation will focus on important changes, including the introduction of a strength-based conceptualization and a recovery orientation, helping clients identify their values and aspirations and overcome challenges to taking steps to act in alignment with them, integrating techniques from other evidence-based modalities, using the conceptualization to overcome therapeutic ruptures, and adapting treatment for each individual client, considering the client’s age, gender, developmental level, education, socio-economic status, cultural background, history (including trauma), environmental contexts (such as racism), and other factors.   Original webinar date: September 30, 2022. Presenters

Judith Beck, PhD

Dr. Beck is President of the non-profit Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which virtually trains health and mental health professionals nationally and internationally in CBT.  She is also Clinical Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of over 100 articles and chapters as well as seven books.  Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Basics and Beyond has been published in over 20 countries and its third edition (2020) includes a recovery orientation. Her online CBT courses have been taken in 130 countries worldwide. 

Paul Grant, PhD

Dr. Grant is Director of Research, Innovation, and Practice at the Beck Institute Center for Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy (CT-R). With Aaron T. Beck, he originated CT-R and conducted foundational research to validate it. He is a recipient of awards from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. Dr. Grant developed group, family, and milieu CT-R approaches, and directs large projects implementing CT-R nationally and internationally. He has developed innovative implementation tools and is involved in researching positive beliefs and teamwide culture change as mediators of successful CT-R outcomes. He is the co-author of Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy for Serious Mental Health Conditions and Schizophrenia: Cognitive Theory, Research, and Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Patients with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) have a perceived or imagined defect in their physical appearance and engage in compulsive behaviors. Though there has been a surge of effective treatments in the past ten years, BDD is still under recognized and misdiagnosed. In this workshop, we will review the theoretical and empirical models of the psychopathology of and treatment for BDD, as well as discuss and instruct on strategies to mitigate symptoms (i.e., image rescripting, attentional training, habit reversal, and exposure and response prevention). This workshop will emphasize recent improvements in BDD treatment and new treatment strategies.  Original webinar date: September 30, 2022. CC.

Fugen Neziroglu, PhD

Dr. Fugen Neziroglu is a board certified behavior and cognitive psychologist, and the co-founder/director of the Bio Behavioral Institute in Great Neck NY, a clinic specializing in anxiety and obsessive compulsive related disorders. She has presented and published over 175 papers in scientific journals and authored over fifteen books on obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders, including Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Advances in Psychotherapy and Evidence Based Practice. Dr. Neziroglu is also a member of many national and international societies and is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Obsessive Compulsive Foundation (IOCDF), Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), and President of OCDNY. 

Sony Khemlani-Patel, PhD

Dr. Khemlani-Patel graduated from Hofstra University's PhD. Clinical/School program (Hempstead, NY) in 2001. Dr. Khemlani is licensed in New York and New Jersey and currently service as Clinical Director at the Bio Behavioral Institute. She is on the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Board of the International OCD Foundation. She is also on the Board of OCD-New York, which is a NY State non-profit organization. OCD-NY is the NY State Affiliate of the International OCD Foundation. She taught as an adjunct professor for two semesters at NY Institute of Technology in 2000.

Professional Ethics, Risk Management, and Ethical Decision Making

This workshop will discuss ethics within the context of cognitive behavioral therapy. Topics for discussion will include risk management, informed consent, confidentiality, record keeping, out-of-office activities, and other ethical-decision making issues within the context of relevant statutes, case law, and the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.   Original webinar date: September 30, 2022. Stephanie Tabashneck, PsyD, JD

Dr. Stephanie Tabashneck is a forensic psychologist and attorney in Boston, MA. She is the 2022 Senior Fellow in Law and Applied Neuroscience at the Center for Law, Brain and Behavior at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tabashneck serves on the American Psychological Association Ethics Committee. Recent publications include the book Substance Use and Parenting: Best Practices for Family Court Practitioners, an article on the opioid crisis and family drug courts, and a chapter in Representing People with Mental Disabilities: A Practical Guide for Criminal Defense Lawyers.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Depression in Competitive Athletes

Competitive sport is both physically and mentally challenging. Although athletes often believe they can respond to emotional stressors by “toughing it out,” they still experience anxiety and depression. This presentation will provide an overview of the unique conditions faced by athletes that impact their mental health, such as psychological pressure to win, and what therapists should know about athletic culture and environments to work effectively. The presentation will also describe how to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy to address anxiety and depression as well as enhance sport performance (e.g. cognitive flexibility and mindfulness). Original webinar date: September 30, 2022. Jason von Stietz, Ph.D.

Dr. Jason von Stietz is a licensed psychologist in group practice at CBT Center of Southern California. He specializes in OCD, insomnia, and sport psychology. He provides team building and mental skills training for collegiate athletes. He is a member of the International OCD Foundation's Anxiety in Athletes Task Force and the co-chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association's Sport Psychology Special Interest Group. He appears on podcasts discussing mental health and sport psychology in relation to pop culture.
