Description

Critical race theory (CRT) as a framework acknowledges that racism is pervasive in society. As such, understanding CRT must be considered as an essential analytic tool and clinical lens for Clinical Social Workers to comprehend, how racism impacts the psychological wellbeing of clients who present for emotional and behavioral health treatment. Original webinar date: October 26, 2022. CC.

Learning Objectives:

1.   Identify the critical elements of Critical Race Theory and the application to understanding emotional and behavioral health.
2.   Develop an understanding of how you can bring elements of concerns in Critical Race Theory to the treatment process.
3.   Apply learned knoweldge by using case analysis examples.

Presenter

Janice Berry Edwards, PhD, LICSW, LCSW, ACSW, BCD

Dr. Edwards is a clinical social worker. She received her degrees from Howard University School of Social Work and the National Catholic School of Social Work, Catholic University. Dr. Edwards is a Professor in the School of Social Work at Howard University. She is in private practice providing clinical social work psychodynamic and psychoanalytic treatment. Dr. Edwards’ range of experiences extends from working as a policy analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services to providing clinical services to inpatient psychiatrically hospitalized children, adolescents, and adults to outpatient psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families. Prior to entering Academia, she was the Clinical Director of the Emergency Psychiatric Response Team at the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a period of ten years. In her position, she was responsible for the assessment, intervention, and treatment of crisis cases where she provided trauma treatment in a wide range of clinical scenarios. She maintains a practice in Washington, D.C. She serves on the Board of the Washington School of Psychiatry in Washington, D.C. Dr. Edwards has served as a consultant to numerous agencies in Washington, D.C. Dr. Edwards has extensive experience macro practice and in clinical social work practice. She has publications in the areas clinical social work practice and social work education. She is an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, The Greater Washington Society for Clinical Social Work, the Clinical Social Work Association, and the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work, where she is currently the President elect. Dr. Edwards is a member of CSWE Trauma Task Force and a Member National Center for Social Work Trauma Education and Workforce Development Collaborative.
