Understanding Nutrition and Mental Health

In collaboration with the American Nutrition Association (ANA), the APA Office of Continuing Education in Psychology is delighted to co-sponsor three CE webinars that explore the relationship between nutrition and health by taking a closer look at the behavioral elements of eating, the impact of nutrition on anxiety, and the gut-brain connection. 

The special series will consist of three 60-minute webinars. All programs include Lecture, PowerPoint slides, and Q&A with the presenters. Webinars may also include interactive polling, video/audio clips, and roleplaying.

Continuing Education (CE) credit is included in the registration fee. Each webinar (live or video on-demand) will provide 1.0 hour of CE credit. If you registered for the bundle package, a total of 3 CE credits is available for participation in the complete event. 

Participants will receive archived version of the aired webinars within 5 days of the live broadcast and will still have the opportunity to earn CE credits. Closed captioning is included in the archived version.

Food and Mood: Scientific Understanding and Clinical Strategies

Food is medicine. However, there is much more that goes into the selection of food, including one’s mood and behavior. In this webinar, learn about the cutting-edge published science that supports the interrelationship between food and mood, and how to apply these findings in clinical practice. Attendees will gather insights about the role of nutrition in mental health, whether mood defines food selection or if nutrients change food choices, how stress and emotions mediate one's relationship with food, and, finally, a definition of emotional eating and clinical strategies to help patients overcome their challenges in this area. Original webinar date: November 2, 2022. CC.

Deanna Minich, PhD, CNS, FACN, IFMCP

Dr. Minich is a holistically-minded health educator and author with more than twenty years’ experience in nutrition, mind-body-spirit health, and functional medicine. Dr. Minich holds master’s and doctorate degrees in nutrition and medical sciences and has lectured globally on health topics. She teaches for the graduate program in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine at the University of Western States, has published six books on health and wellness, and over forty scientific publications. Overcoming Anxiety With Nutrition

Nearly 30% of American adults report symptoms of anxiety. Psychologists have many tools to support those experiencing acute or chronic anxiety and related conditions. Nutrition and lifestyle can also offer important biochemical, emotional, and social benefits. Beyond Serotonin: Exploring the Bidirectional Gut-Brain Connection in Mental Health

For decades, approaches to treatment of depression and anxiety have focused on neurotransmitter balance and function. In this presentation, we'll explore the multitude of factors that impact mental health, including inflammation and environment, but focusing on the gut-brain axis. Lara Zakaria, PharmD, MS, CNS, CDN, IFMCP

Dr. Zakaria is a Functional Pharmacist and Clinical Nutritionist and Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner (IFMCP). She is adjunct professor of nutritional biochemistry and therapeutics at the University of Bridgeport and at George Washington University, as well as guest instructor for Functional Medicine at LECOM College of Pharmacy. Dr Zakaria spends her time writing, teaching, mentoring, and consulting on integrative medicine and personalized nutrition and currently practices as part of a multi-disciplinary Functional Medicine clinic.
