This webinar provides an overview of a rapid-growing area of practice, Lifestyle Medicine, which focuses on leveraging key aspects of lifestyle to promote disease prevention, treatment, and even reversal. The key aspects of lifestyle include diet, physical activity, stress management, risky substance use mitigation, social connections, and sleep. The webinar further highlights the opportunities for psychologists and psychological science to contribute to this area of medicine, as well as the specific opportunities for health psychologists. Original webinar date: May 2, 2024.   1. Explain what Lifestyle Medicine is and some examples of evidence-based applications.

Presenter

Alyssa Vela, PhD

Dr. Vela is a licensed Clinical Health Psychologist and board certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. She practices as a cardiac and transplant psychologist with the Cardiac Behavioral Medicine team at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. She is also an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where she is actively involved in research and education with a focus on cardiometabolic health equity.
