Description

Therapeutic relationship-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TRF-CBT) is a framework in which CBT is delivered using the therapeutic relationship as both a facilitator and an agent of change. Core elements of the therapeutic relationship are discussed, including the therapeutic alliance and elements that are considered to a lesser extent in CBT research and practice, including transference, countertransference, and the real relationship. The application of relationship-enhancing therapist behaviors (e.g., empathy, positive regard) within the CBT framework are explained. In addition, the use of the therapeutic relationship in the delivery of CBT strategies, such as cognitive restructuring, problem solving, exposure, and schema modification, are illustrated.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define three components of the therapeutic relationship and be able to identify their relevance across the course of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
  2. Discuss ways to harness aspects of the therapeutic relationship to serve as a facilitator of change in CBT
  3. Explain ways to harness aspects of the therapeutic relationship to serve as an agent of change in CBT.
