Understanding the ICD-10-CM: Practical Concepts and Considerations in the DSM-5 Crossover

Description

The impending HIPAA mandates will require the use of ICD-10-CM diagnostic codes later this year. This workshop provides an overview of the distinctive organization and application of the ICD-10-CM and key features that distinguish it from the DSM-5. Historical, conceptual and practical features are considered, together with side-by-side comparisons of the most recent versions of the ICD and the DSM in relation to common clinical diagnoses. Learning Objectives

1. Describe the origins of the ICD.

2. Identify at least three differences between the ICD and the DSM.

3. Identify at least three disorders that are included in the ICD that are NOT included in the DSM.

Greg J. Neimeyer, PhD

As a lifetime inductee into the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars, much of Dr. Neimeyer’s career has been dedicated to teaching and training in the areas of psychodiagnosis and psychopathology.  His professional development trainings on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) have been presented nationally and internationally in a wide variety of academic, community, and hospital contexts, as well as to mental health associations, agencies and organizations.  A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Neimeyer is the recipient of its Award for Outstanding Achievement in Career and Personality Research. His trainings draw from his extensive clinical experience in medical residency training programs, VAMCs, university counseling centers, and private practice.
