This presentation briefly reviews research on the impact of sacred values on the deployment of violence and argues that contemporary religiously motivated violent groups differ significantly from previous violent groups motivated primarily by political, economic or ethno-nationalistic concerns. Framing Muslims: Islamophobia and the Revivial of Historical Stereotypes

Since the time of the imperial wars of the Middle Ages, Muslims have been framed with the same gross essentializations by Christian and then Western powers during times of hostility. This presentation reviews the stereotypical characterizations of Muslims as irrational, sexually deviant and lacking in autonomy. Original recording date: Feb. 20, 2016.

James W. Jones

Dr. Jones is a distinguished Professor of Religion and an Adjunct Professor of Clinical Psychology at Rutgers University in New Jersey, a Senior Research Fellow at the Center on Terrorism of John Jay College in New York City, a Lecturer in Psychiatry and Religion at Union Theological Seminary in New York, and a Visiting professor at the University of Uppsala in Sweden.

Dr. Mattson is a Muslim religious leader, a professor of Islamic Studies and an interfaith activist. She is the London and Windsor Community Chair in Islamic Studies at Huron University College at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada. She is a Senior Fellow of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Amman, Jordan.
